You can now add movies to the list of live-streaming entertainment that’s helping you keep your wits about you during quarantine. The Black-owned animation studio behind ‘Hair Love’ is teaching Hollywood how to be authentic

Lion Forge Animation had the breakout animation hit of the year, and now it’s on a global quest to tell stories that haven’t traditionally been told. Earlier this year, a heartfelt short film about an African American father who has to endure the (arduous and terrifying) task of doing his young daughter’s hair for the first time captured the entertainment industry’s attention by taking home an Oscar. The film, created and directed by Matthew A. Cherry , had originated as a Kickstarter campaign in 2017, where it raised $300,000—its goal was $75,000—and then was brought to the attention of Lion Forge Animation, which came on board as a producer. How filmmaker Matthew Cherry’s ‘Hair Love’ changed the conversation around natural hairstyles

His Oscar-winning animated short, which showcases a girl’s relationship with her curls and her father, will soon be an animated series. Former NFL player Matthew Cherry had been working in Hollywood for nearly a decade as a writer and editor when he was inspired, by viral videos of dads doing their children’s hair, to make a short film about a girl’s relationship with both her curls and her father. As a child, he rarely saw people who looked like him in the cartoons he watched. Even today, he says, “seeing Black fathers being affectionate toward their kids is an anomaly.” The result is Hair Love , a seven-­minute-long film that won 2020’s Oscar for best animated short. After launching a Kickstarter campaign with an initial goal of $75,000, he raised nearly four times that, allowing him to finance a Hair Love children’s book, which became a best seller.
