CRISPR gene-editing trials have taken off—and may hold the key to medical breakthroughs. CRISPR-Cas9 is a method for quickly and accurately editing the genome of virtually any living thing. Using custom-built guide RNA paired with a cutting enzyme (Cas9), it can find and snip a selected sequence of DNA or RNA, eliminating or replacing a “bad” gene. Since it was first described, in late 2012, CRISPR has drastically accelerated the scope of research and moved into practical applications in medicine. So far in 2020, there are 15 trials underway. In medicine, where new drugs take a decade or more to develop, that’s game changing. Read Full Story

What an equitable coronavirus response should look like

{ object.primary_image.title }}

As the virus spreads, the government response needs to take into account the many people who can’t afford care or a two-week quarantine away from work. Pandemics highlight global inequalities, from who is educated about a disease to who can afford a visit to the doctor if they get sick, to who can work remotely—or even take time off work—to recover and prevent the spread of the disease to others. Health officials have said it’s inevitable that America will see an outbreak of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that was first reported in Wuhan, China, and has since spread to more than 60 countries, infecting more than 88,000 people so far. Quarantined kids destroying your carpets? Try these washable rugs

{ object.primary_image.title }}

Ruggable’s rugs are child- and animal-proof. Which is great, since my daughter recently used hers as a canvas for her finger-painting project. My four-year-old has now been stuck at home for two months due to the COVID-19 crisis, and she is officially stir crazy. She appears to be taking out her angst on her bedroom rug. Last week, she “decorated” it with a pink marker. Then, she brought grape juice to her room for nap time but proceeded to knock the tumbler over, leaving a large purple stain. Finally, after a particularly muddy walk, she rolled around on it like a puppy, leaving brown smudges everywhere. Read Full Story

{ object.primary_image.title }}

For the first time ever, the Paris climate agreement has formed the basis of a major court ruling. The project to expand London’s Heathrow airport was first proposed in 2009, and it has had a turbulent journey since. It was initially backed by a Labour government, canceled a year later, revived, then backed by a Conservative government in 2018. Proponents have touted the plan as a source of extra jobs, additional air routes, and fewer delays. The U.K. Department of Transport has estimated an economic benefit of £61 billion, or $79 billion, over the next 60 years. Read Full Story

Canceling the MarTech Conference scheduled for next month and sharing our updated plans ahead

{ object.primary_image.title }}

Hey, I hope you’re doing okay. A crazy and surreal time we’re in. The photo above is my new “office” in the basement of my house. Yeah, I’ve got a green screen set up. I’d like to claim it’s to support seamless virtual backgrounds in the continuous stream of video meetings that now occupy my day. But truthfully, it’s mostly just to hide the massive piles of clutter that our basement gravitationally accumulates. My wife bumped me out of our home office that’s above ground, with a nicer view and fewer heaps of random stuff, to make it her new work-from-home command center. My daughter, whose school is closed for at least a couple more weeks, has taken over the rest of the house. It’s not a big house. So the basement has become my refuge. I’m not complaining though. I’m thankful that we’ve been able to adapt to working …
