A simple way to tackle America’s most entrenched problems? Retrofit houses

{ object.primary_image.title }}

Upgrading low-income housing would improve public health, the environment, and racial equity all at once. During a presidential election debate on Oct. 22, 2020, former President Donald Trump railed against Democratic proposals to retrofit homes . “They want to take buildings down because they want to make bigger windows into smaller windows,” he said. “As far as they’re concerned, if you had no window, it would be a lovely thing.” Read Full Story

After devoting most of his career to collaboration between people, Blues Wireless’s founder is helping machines talk to each other in service of humans. “I don’t know you’ve seen this thing yet, but it’s light enough, and it’s got Velcro mounting, so if you have a sunny window somewhere in the house, you can just open the window, reach out, and—after you turn it on—just stick it out there, and it’ll be solar-charged and run autonomously.” Read Full Story

Painting wind turbine blades black can reduce bird deaths 70%

{ object.primary_image.title }}

Wind power is dangerous for birds, but there’s a new, simple, cheap solution: paint. If you’ve heard President Trump talk about wind power, you’ve heard stories about dead birds : “You want to see a bird graveyard? You just go. Take a look . . . Go under a windmill someday. You’ll see more birds than you’ve ever seen, ever, in your life.” Wind turbines, in fact, aren’t the biggest killer of birds—that would be house cats, which kill an estimated 1.4 billion to 3.7 billion birds in North America alone each year, roughly 100 times more than wind farms. Building windows and cell phone towers are also bigger culprits. But as birds struggle with the impacts of climate change, anything to help reduce unnecessary deaths is critical. On wind farms, the fix could be as simple as paint. Read Full Story

A simple alternative that is equally effective. Everyone keeps telling me to go outside! Take a walk! Get some fresh air! But here’s the thing: I like being inside. I like sitting. I’m perfectly happy opening a window for my daily dose of fresh air. Leaving the house (!) for a walk is not the kind of break I want. If I’m going to take a midday break, it’ll be to watch reruns of The Office or do a crossword puzzle. Read Full Story

Here’s what would need to happen for $2,000 stimulus checks to pass

{ object.primary_image.title }}

House Democrats have passed a bill giving Americans $2,000 stimulus checks. Here’s what it’ll still take for that to happen. After stalling for a week, President Trump finally signed the latest stimulus bill. The bill provides for another round of stimulus checks– but worth up to only $600 this time . That’s far less than what most Americans were hoping for–and less than what the Democrats wanted, which were checks worth $2,000 apiece. That’s why the Dems put a second stimulus bill to the floor in the House last night, calling for $2,000 stimulus checks. It passed the Democratic-controlled House with a two-thirds majority. Still, that’s hardly the only step needed to get the two-grand in your pocket. Here’s what’s left: Read Full Story

This see-through wood could replace glass windows

{ object.primary_image.title }}

It’s lighter, stronger, easier to make, and would make it easier to heat and cool buildings. A sheet of transparent new material at a University of Maryland lab looks like it might be plastic. But it’s actually wood—and it could eventually be used to make energy-efficient windows or even see-through buildings. Read Full Story

The impossible for capitalism is suddenly possible

{ object.primary_image.title }}

Just a few weeks ago, the changes we’ve seen companies make in the face of coronavirus would have seemed radical. When this is all over, can we go back? In the last few years, the political science concept of the Overton Window—the range of ideas seen as politically acceptable—entered the zeitgeist. Both the campaigns of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump are seen as having stretched the Overton Window, bringing ideas into the mainstream that had previously been radical. Read Full Story
